The History of Pictou Lodge
A Step Back In Time
Originally built as Wentworth Lodge by a group of local entrepreneurs known as The Bungalow Camps Company, the property was purchased at auction in 1926 by the Canadian National Railway and renamed Pictou Lodge. Built in log cabin style, the main building of the resort contained the dining room and a large screened verandah lounge. Sleeping accommodation was provided in cabins of four, six and ten rooms. During the day, guests would congregate in the dining room and verandah, or enjoy the private beach and tennis courts. When the evenings were cool, fires were lit in the open stone fireplaces. Cabarets were held every Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The dancers came in from Halifax and were taken the next morning by horse and carriage to nearby Stellarton, to catch the return train. Over the years, Pictou Lodge has had many guests from around the world, including King George V and Princess Juliana of Holland, who stayed at the Lodge during World War II. In 2006, we were pleased to have U.S. Secretary of State Ms. Condoleezza Rice stay with us during her visit to Canada. The Lodge was sold by the CNR in 1957, and was run by a number of owners over the years. In 1982 the property was purchased by Carol Ann and Peter VanWesten. They completed extensive restorations over the next decade, providing a wide variety of accommodation styles and recreation facilities for guests. In 1998, a successful nine year partnership between Maritime Inns & Resorts and the VanWesten family was established. 2007 marked an exciting new beginning for Pictou Lodge under private ownership, as we continually strive to improve and expand our facilities and services as a top-rated meeting and travel destination. We have received numerous awards including the Commitment to Excellence recognition for ongoing national certification, the Pictou County Shining Star Award and the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry Association Golden Hospitality Award as recognition for exceptional service in meeting – and exceeding – our guests’ expectations. Pictou Lodge Resort – truly a Nova Scotia premier seaside destination.
